Episode 54 – But What Would Margaret Thatcher Think of the Emmys?
Sometimes I put shows together without regarding whether the two halves make a lot of sense together. Usually, when I’m doing a solo show, that doesn’t matter. I can tie topics together across the break if I need to (though usually I don’t). With guests, though, it’s often handy to have a little continuity from one to another.
Episode 54 is not going to be known for its continuity. It will, however, be known for one of my best guests, Claire Berlinski. Claire is the author of There Is No Alternative: Why Margaret Thatcher Matters, one of the best biographies I’ve ever read about a subject who should be talked about more these days. I was a little surprised to learn how little I remember of the Thatcher years and how relevant it, and the woman behind it, is to what has been happening, politically, in the United States lately. Claire lays things out very nicely and drops in a couple little bonus anecdotes I think you’ll like.
I know you’ll like the second half as Kim Haney returned to talk about the recent Emmy Awards show and the coming fall television season. Yes, there was nostalgia for the old TV Guide season preview editions and the old lament that television isn’t the draw to us that it used to be. That doesn’t mean we didn’t find some potential gems. You’ll have to listen in to learn what we unearthed.
