Introducing…The Real Socky the Sock Puppet!
Way back in Episode 87, I inadvertently introduced a new character to the show. I wanted to illustrate the ridiculousness of the White House press office with a personality even more ridiculous, if possible, than Robert Gibbs or Jay Carney. Thus was born Socky the Sock Puppet (and you can get more about that, and the joys of improvisation in Episode 102).
The only problem is, asI noted in his return appearance as the Substitute Spokespuppet for the World Health Organization in Episode 96, he didn’t actually have a physical body. While that works just fine for those of you who listen to the podcast, the live UStream audience got to see me making puppet motions with my hand, Señor Wences-style.
Something had to be done. However, I am not a particularly crafty person and The Delivery’s budget wouldn’t quite fit a purchase for a bespoke sock puppet into it. Fortunately — thankfully! — a loyal listener who wishes to remain anonymous contacted me and said she would make Socky for me, plus include an extra surprised, based on a slip of the tongue I made in Episode 102.
So, last Wednesday, I found a package in my mailbox…and inside it?
SOCKY!

As you can tell, we already get along famously, though we did have a few minutes where we disputed the strategies employed by each party in the debt ceiling negotiations. He seems to relish his position as Substitute White House Spokespuppet. I, however, am not fooled. Note the skepticism.
He’s also taken quite well to the Fearless Delivery Microphone (A Blue Snowball, if you must know. He’s picky).

But Socky did not come alone. He brought his erstwhile, and heretofore unknown companion, Nameless the Sock Puppy. Okay…that’s what I’m calling him until inspiration strikes or until I come up with a clever contest by which one of you can give him his permanent name!
He is kind of cute, don’t you think? I’ll have to re-think my No Dogs in the Podcast policy…

He's so cute! I want one!
